There are a multitude of different licenses you can get in Florida if you’re looking to sell alcoholic beverages on your property. The license you should get very much depends on what kind of beverages you’re looking to sell at your establishment, and how they’ll be consumed.

Here’s everything you need to know about obtaining a 4Cop license and what it’ll mean for your business.

WHAT IS A 4COP LICENSE?

The license you buy will dictate what kind of beverages you can sell at your establishment. The 4Cop license allows you to sell liquor drinks and package deals, as well as wine and beers.

This allows you to both serve it at the establishment and sell them for offsite consumption.

BENEFITS OF HOLDING THE 4COP LICENSE

The biggest benefit of buying this type of license is that you’ll have the legal right to sell all kinds of alcoholic beverages at your establishment. The other benefit is that you’ll actually have limited competition in your sector, thanks to the way licenses are distributed.

In Florida, the number of licenses given out by the government is limited depending on the number of people in the population. The state will increase the number of licenses they give out every time the population grows by 7,500 people. That means if you get a license, you’ll have much less competition than other stores would have.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN GETTING A 4COP LIQUOR LICENSE IN FLORIDA

When you’re looking to get a liquor license, the first thing you have to do is ensure that you’re giving yourself plenty of time. Plan ahead, and make sure that you’ll have it before you open up for business.

This means that you won’t find yourself with an establishment that can’t serve liquor, even for a little while, as this can hurt your business in the long run.

As well as this, you’ll have to have the money ready to buy the license. Once you get access to a license, you want to get it in order as soon as possible.

Finally, you’ll have to remember that the process for getting a liquor license depends on a lottery. You’ll have to have the money ready to enter the lottery and be prepared whether you do or don’t win.

Now, you’ll need to know how much the license will cost you, so you can start planning to obtain them. Firstly, to enter the lottery, you’ll have to pay $100. This is non-refundable.

If you win the lottery, you’ll need to pay $1820, depending on your circumstances.

HOW TO OBTAIN A 4COP LICENSE

Now you know all the details about obtaining a license, here’s how you go about getting yours.
Firstly, you’ll need to get your plans together. If you’re planning ahead, you can ensure that you have your license in time for the opening.

Next, you’ll have to ensure you have the cash required. Having it ready and on hand will make the application process next quicker.

Now, you’ll want to enter the lottery. In Florida, this usually runs from the third Monday in August for 45 days. Make a note on your calendar and make sure that you enter in time, otherwise, you’ll have to wait until next year.

WHAT IF YOU DON’T WIN THE 4COP LICENSE LOTTERY?

4Cop licenses are in high demand, and not every business that enters the lottery will win one. This can seem like a pretty big deal at first, but there are other options for you if you don’t win a license on your first attempt.

Standard 4Cop licenses are provided through a quota system, but there’s also a 4Cop-SRX license available if your establishment meets certain requirements.

This license will allow you to sell beer, wine, and spirits for consumption on-premises. You will need to be a legitimate restaurant operation that derives 51% of current revenue from food and other non-alcohol sales.

You won’t be able to sell packaged alcohol to take off-premises, but if you own a restaurant, this probably won’t be a major concern for you.

To qualify for a non-quota 4Cop-SRX license, your business will need to:

  • Have between 2,500 and 5,000 square foot of floor space under permanent cover. If you are in Broward County, the minimum is reduced to 2,000 square foot.
  • Have available seating and tables to serve between 150 and 250 patrons. Counties can set their own specific limitations within this range.
  • Serve full course meals any time that liquor is being offered for sale. This means that if you operate a bar with limited kitchen hours, you won’t qualify for a 4Cop-SRX license.

The yearly licensing fee for a 4Cop-SRX license is $1,850.
BUYING LICENSES ON THE OPEN MARKET
If you don’t win the lottery and don’t meet the requirements for a 4Cop-SRX license, you can instead buy a 4Cop quota license on the open market. These licenses are sold by businesses that are closing, moving out of Florida, or changing their operating models.

Licenses sold on the open market are in high demand, because they are more flexible when compared to an SRX license. This means you will pay a premium for one of these licenses, but you can usually make the difference back thanks to increased foot traffic and more profit from liquor sales.

Many of the best restaurants aim for liquor sales that exceed 30% of their total revenue. Liquor is high margin and is easy to store, so serving liquor along with your standard menu could significantly increase your bottom line.
